LIFE — Why?
What is the LIFE program?
The acronym LIFE stands for "L'Instrument Financier pour l'Environnement", or "Financial Instrument for the Environment". It is a European Union funding program for the environment and climate. The sub-programs Nature and Biodiversity as well as Circular Economy and Quality of Life fall under the Environment area. The climate area includes climate protection and adaptation to climate change as well as the clean energy transition. The preservation of biodiversity is an important goal of the European Union, which is why funding is primarily provided for projects that take place in Natura 2000 areas, which together form a Europe-wide network of protected areas.
What are the objectives of the LIFE program?
The Natura 2000 network of protected areas aims to permanently safeguard Europe's natural habitats. The legal basis for the protection of biotopes and species within the European Union is the Birds Directive and the Flora and Fauna Habitats Directive.
